Description For Prospective Staff:
The North Country Camps, Lincoln for boys and Whippoorwill for girls,
were established in 1920, and have been led by the Gucker family
since the beginning. A half mile apart on the forested shore of
Augur Lake, the two camps are "brother/sister" camps, each with its
own facilities. Yet we are one organization, operate on the same
schedule, and join together for a variety of coed activities.
We believe in healthy outdoor living , a strong sense of community
and the development of skills at one's own pace. We believe strongly
in the value of an extended living experience in a safe, stable, fun,
yet challenging outdoor environment. We believe in introducing
children to a community where they have a say in what takes place and
take responsibility for their own choices; where they can live
energetically and purposefully, yet unhurriedly; where they find
their own style and self-worth without excessive competitive
pressure; where learning is a result of participation - campers and
counselors working, learning, and playing together.
We offer a wide variety of in-camp activities, many of which are
unique to our Adirondack setting. An extensive wilderness trip
program is a major part of the camp experience.
