Description For Prospective Staff:
We staff our health center with a team of nurses (typically five) and one physician. Each physician at camp does a one week rotation, so in total, there are seven doctors as there are seven weeks of camp.
The team of nurses is ultimately responsible for overseeing all medical needs of our children from cuts, scrapes and bruises to daily medications to illness. Together, the nurses come up with a schedule that allows for proper coverage of the health center throughout the day while also allowing for time off and days off.
All campers that attend camp have been given a physical before their arrival and all medical needs / attention will be provided with a Medical Form for each child.
Communication to our parents is absolutely critical. That is, if a camper will be staying overnight in the health center or needs to go into town for x-rays or to see a specialist, we must be in touch with their parents to make them aware of the situation.
I would describe being a Camp Nurse as someone that needs to identify "real" sickness / medical attention versus those that just need some extra TLC. That's a big part of the job. Sometimes, campers will use the health center because they are homesick (totally normal) but aren't really sick.
At the same time, some campers will come to get out of an activity. In these cases, the campers just need someone to talk to and someone to comfort them, letting them know that everything is OK.
