Description For Prospective Staff:
Nestled in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, The Open Hearts Camp is a colorful, unique, progressive, and connected summer camp for children who have had, and are fully recovered from, open heart surgery.
If you stopped by our camp on any given summer day you would find healthy, active children engaging in a dynamic range of athletics, arts & crafts, indoor rec. games, ropes course, swimming, community field trips and more. The small numbers of campers in each two-week session (20-25,) along with a philosophy of very open communication creates an environment where individual personalities really come alive allowing the staff to get a genuine feel for the character of each camper.
While it is the shared bond of cardiac challenges that has brought these children together, they would be the first to tell you that our camp experience is not about health limitations. It is about being a vibrant child or teen- laughing, exploring, connecting, learning, playing, and hanging-out in a very cool, very supportive, very campy environment.
Our program is a good match for staff who look at communication and engagement as an art. A human touch, solid decision making, awesome sense of humor, general poise, genuine personality are all key traits to bring to our eclectic environment. The small staff size makes for a very tight-knit group that operates more like a family than a big machine.
